In 1923, Hermann Oberth released his book "Die Rakete zu den Planetenräumen". By this the scientific foundations for the departure into space where set. Some enthusiastic practitioners picked up on Oberth's ideas, including the young Wernher von Braun, and experimented in rocket engineering.

With the onset of World War II, the German Army provided the means to advance rocket engineering on a scale that brought real progress and achievements within reach. The testing ground of Peenemünde was pounded out of the ground and hundreds of engineers and technicians headed by Werhner von Braun (29 years old in 1942) started the development of the first rocket to reach the universe. Although the developers of the rocket worked for the war machine, their declared goal was space flight. This is not least reflected in the ideogram of the "Woman in the Moon" at the rear of the rocket, which touched space on October 3, 1942 as the first man-made object.

The use of the rocket in World War II killed around 5,000 people. In connection with the construction of the weapon, especially in the Mittelbau Dora concentration camp, about 20,000 people were destroyed.

After the war, Americans and Russians adopted the technological advances of the Third Reich, including rocket technology. The competition between the two world powers, in turn, released funds to take the very big step. On April 12, 1961, Yuri Gagarin flew into space as the first human being, and on July 20, 1969, Neil Armstrong became the first man to set foot on a foreign celestial body. Wernher von Braun with his team developed, building on the foundations from Peenemünde, the rocket that brought humanity to the moon for the first time.
