O-Sensei Nakazono was born on 22 May 1918 in the Kagoshima district of southern Japan and began his studies by training in kendo at the age of 6, judo at 12 and karate at 19. He later studied many other forms of martial arts; he then immersed himself fully in the art of Aikido, learning directly from O-Sensei Ueshiba, its founder. It was Ueshiba Sensei who introduced him to the Kototama principle and said that it was the foundation of the principles of Aikido.

Following his mother's inclination, Sensei Nakazono began his training in acupuncture in 1934 at the age of 16. He was a student of George Ohsawa, the founder of macrobiotics, and Sakai Sensei, who taught the spirit of the finite form, Jizo Bosatsu.

In the 1960s, he settled in France with his family and began to train European students in Aikido and healing techniques.

He was reintroduced to the Kototama principle by Sensei Ogasawara and reworked every aspect of his life and work from this profound point of view. In 1972, he moved to Santa Fe, where he founded the Kototama Institute to teach aikido, natural healing and the Kototama principle. He inspired the passage of the New Mexico Acupuncture Act in 1973 and was honoured with the ‘A Living Treasure’ award in Santa Fe, New Mexico in July 1984.

Sensei Nakazono taught the Kototama principle in Santa Fe and around the world. He dedicated his life to passing on this principle for the benefit of all mankind. His books epitomise his teachings, his great vision and his compassion for humanity. He died on 8 October 1994.
