Our cosmic neighbourhood

This bookmark shows the planets of our solar system – in a sense our "cosmic neighborhood". The German Aerospace Center (Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt; DLR) is involved in many missions to explore them. In its school labs, the DLR_School_Labs, it introduces children and young people to these and many other exciting research projects.

The proportions of the individual planets were only hinted at here. Compared to the four inner planets Mercury, Venus, Earth and Mars, the four outer "gas giants" Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune are actually much larger. And of course you never see the planets so close together in one picture: In reality, they are millions and billions of kilometres apart. But you can explore them with satellites and probes. You not only learn a lot about these distant worlds, but also about the origin and development of our own "Blue Planet" Earth.
