All our Astronaut Foods have the Certified Space Technology insigna on the packaging to indicate that they are the same range as used in space by NASA Astronauts. The brand Astronaut Foods was created in 1975 in conjunction with the National Air and Space Museum in the USA to provide authentic foods that had been in space to their museums customers.

You don’t have to be an astronaut to enjoy Astronaut Foods. Astronaut Freeze-dried Ice Cream is, in fact, real ice cream - all the proof you'll need is in the tasting. The freeze drying technique removes 98% of the original water content, and ultimately produces a ready-to-eat dried ice cream bar that doesn’t melt! At first, the texture is much like a cookie, but quickly softens in your mouth and returns to the texture of ice cream.

How are Astronaut Foods made? Freeze-drying, or lysophilization, removes water from the food by lowering the air pressure to a point where ice shifts from a solid to a gas. The food is placed in a vacuum chamber and frozen until the water crystalizes. The air pressure is lowered, creating a vacuum, forcing air out of the chamber; next heat is applied, vapourising the ice; finally a freezing coil traps the vaporized water. This process continues for hours, resulting in a perfect freeze-dried Astronaut Food, suitable to eat for up to 25 years.

Astronaut Space Food has since been a best selling item in museum shops all over the United States and now is an extremely popular item within the UK and European gift, gadget, novelty and promotional purposes product markets. It is also suitable for educational puposes and shools.
