Ariane 5 is the most powerful European launcher ever developed on behalf of ESA (European Space Agency). It enables heavy payloads to be carried into Earth orbit. It mainly transports communication satellites in geostationary and low Earth orbits. After a false launch in 1996, the first Ariane 5 successfully launched into space on 30 October 1997. By the end of 2009, a total of 49 Ariane 5 launches had taken place, of which only 2 failed. This makes it one of the most reliable launch vehicles in the world. Ariane 5 will be launched from the Centre Spatial Guyanais near Kourou, French Guiana. A separate launch site with associated facilities for launch preparation makes it possible to perform up to ten launches per year.
