Aggregat 4

Aggregat 4 (A4) was the type designation of the world's first functioning large rocket with a liquid engine in 1942. It was designed as a long-range ballistic artillery rocket and was the first man-made object to cross the boundary to space - according to the definition of the Fédération Aéronautique Internationale, 100 kilometres altitude (Kármán line). From mid-1945, the A4 formed the starting point for the space developments of the USA and the Soviet Union. The A4 surface-to-surface missile was developed in the German Reich at the Peenemünde Army Research Station (HVA) on Usedom from 1939 onwards under the direction of Wernher von Braun and was used in large numbers during the Second World War from 1944 onwards. In addition to the airplane-like Fieseler Fi 103, called V1, Nazi propaganda also described the A4 rocket as a war-deciding "wonder weapon". In August 1944, Propaganda Minister Joseph Goebbels declared it internally for the first time and in October 1944 publicly as Vergeltungswaffe 2, or V2 for short. From December 1944 at the latest, the German press spoke of the long-range weapon "V 2". The launch units of the Wehrmacht and the SS simply called it "Das Gerät".
