Lunar colonisation

Between 1969 and 1972, the Apollo programme confirmed the technical possibility of regular journeys to the moon. However, the travel costs with the technology used so far amount to at least several hundred million euros per flight and person, so that a colony outside the Earth is difficult to finance. The US entrepreneur and rocket developer Elon Musk is therefore working with his company SpaceX on the fully reusable Starship transport system, which is intended to reduce the price of interplanetary space flights by several orders of magnitude. Among other things, this should make it possible to build a moon base. Amazon founder Jeff Bezos is also working on reusable large rockets with his company Blue Origin and proposed the establishment of a base in one of the lunar polar regions. US Vice President Mike Pence called for the construction of a lunar base in March 2019 and directed NASA to work towards it. A first step is to be the Artemis 3 mission, with which US astronauts are to explore the south polar region of the moon in 2024. For the more distant future, NASA proposes to put a habitable mobility platform on the lunar surface that would allow expeditions of up to 45 days. Russia is considering building a lunar base in the late 2030s. A decision on a corresponding 20-year space programme should be made in 2019. The Federazija spacecraft, intended for manned flights into lunar orbit, has already been under development since the 2000s. In July 2019, it was announced that China, Russia and the European Space Agency (ESA) are considering establishing the joint International Lunar Research Station near the Moon's south pole. Within 2-3 years, scientists are expected to develop a plan to do so. Construction of a Chinese lunar base is scheduled to begin in 2027. In November 2021, NASA opened a tender for a nuclear reactor for permanent power generation for a lunar base.
