Moon
The moon (Mhd. mâne; Latin luna) is the only natural satellite of the earth. Its name is etymologically related to month and refers to the period of its phase change. Because the satellites of other planets in the solar system are usually also called moons in a figurative sense, they are sometimes referred to as the Earth's moon to avoid confusion. With a diameter of 3476 km, it is the fifth largest known moon in the solar system and unusually large compared to its central body, Earth (more than a quarter of the Earth's diameter). Because the moon orbits the Earth relatively closely, it is so far the only alien celestial body that humans have set foot on, and also the best studied. Nevertheless, there are still many uncertainties, for example with regard to its formation and some of its terrain. Its recent development, however, has been largely clarified.
