The Giant Magellan Telescope (GMT) is a planned giant telescope at the Las Campanas Observatory in the highlands of Chile, scheduled for completion in 2029. After its precise calibration, it is expected to have about ten times the resolving power (separating power) of the Hubble Space Telescope. Its name suggests its "kinship" with the two Magellan telescopes at Chile's Las Campanas Observatory.
When completed, it will consist of 7 primary mirrors, each 8.4 m in diameter. Around a central mirror, with a center aperture for the Cassegrain focus, the remaining 6 are closely peripherally mounted, all on a common azimuthal mount. This results in a telescope with an effective mirror diameter of 21.4 m (area), or 24.5 m (resolution). The Large Binocular Telescope (with two such mirrors) on Mt. Graham in the US state of Arizona is considered to be the model for this design. The focal length of the primary mirror is with 18 m extremely short (f/0.7) for such an instrument, which allows a very compact design. (For comparison, the primary mirror of the Palomar Observatory's Hale telescope has a focal length of 17 m with its 5-m mirror). The effective focal length of the entire system is said to be 203 m (f/8.0). The optical design is an aplanatic Gregory telescope. The size of the vignetting-free field of view shall be 26 arcminutes. (For comparison, the apparent diameter of the full moon is about 30 arcminutes).
